They come in these cool colors that make you look totally radical. While it's understandable to be skeptical of something new, you should really check them out. You will be happy with colored contact lenses because they can improve your self-confidence and even make you more popular. This I know from personal experience - My life is so much better now that I wear color contacts. Not only that, they are downright cool. They come in all styles and sizes. There are some that are even created for people in their own custom designs. Can you believe it?

Color contacts are made to work by literally coloring the lens. These days this can even go as far as having drawn on lines and dots to better emulate the natural look of a human eye. But while the lenses themselves are colored on the portion that covers the iris (the colored area of the eye), the part that goes over the pupil is kept clear to make visibility possible while wearing them.

There are three different technologies used in colour contacts to achieve the color-changing effect. The three types currently on the market are visibility tints, enhancement tints, and opaque color tints.

Most contacts today are colored with visibility tint. This method is used on normal, non-colored contact lenses in order to make them easier to see when handling. Visibility tint doesn't change your natural eye color.

Enhancement tints are the next step up in eye color changing technology. These use solid, translucent coloring to enhance the eye's natural color. These work best for people with light eyes.

And lastly, Opaque color tint is the most effective color changing contact technology of all and produce the most dramatic results. The colors are solid and can completely change the color of the eye by covering up the natural color. If you have dark eyes, this is the type of coloured contact for you - The other methods won't work nearly as well.

You will see opaque color tinting used in movies a lot these days. In movies about monsters or zombies where a change in the color of the eye is desired, this is the method used to achieve that effect. But they are also used under normal circumstances when an actor can change their eye color to play a particular part. They have long been used in the motion picture special effects industry - since at least the 1960's. The first instance may have even been earlier than that.

The most awesome thing about color contacts is that your eyes can take on any look that you choose. You can imitate your favorite celebrity, or even change your eyes to look like those of a cat or alligator if you so choose. With color contacts, the possibilities are limitless.

Color contact technology in today's world has become fairly advanced and is getting closer to duplicating the natural color of the human eye every day. Sooner or later it will even be impossible to tell whether someone is wearing colored contacts as the technology will have been perfected as to exactly mimic the natural color of the eye.

In the past, the majority of color contact lenses were made for cosmetic use only, i.e. they had no vision correcting properties. However, this is changing as the technology has improved and people who require vision correction to see well can use color contacts just like they would use normal contact lenses. The results are just as effective in helping people see better. For future reference, lenses with no vision correcting abilities are referred to as "plano" lenses. If you require vision correction, you should probably avoid these kinds of lenses, or at least keep in mind that you will need to use another form of vision correction like glasses to compensate for the lack of vision correction in plano lenses.

Nevertheless, as previously stated there are more and more offerings in the field of colored contacts that provide vision correction. There are colored contacts available for people with astigmatism, people who need bifocals, etc., and the options are growing as well - you can currently buy colored contact lenses that are disposable, long-term, or frequent replacements. These days, there are more options than ever.

Sadly there are some disadvantages of Color Contact Lenses. Sometimes the colored part of the contact will slide on top of the pupil, making it difficult to see. Even though they come in sizes for almost everyone and can even be custom fitted, this is still a problem that can occur with most people. And due to the fact that the pupil of the eye is constantly changing in response to lighting, sometimes your vision can be affected when the pupil becomes larger than the viewing area. Hopefully someday these kinks will be worked out.

As always, if you're having problems with your new color contact lenses, you should set up an appointment with your eye doctor to get to the root of the problem. If you have frequent issues, perhaps contacts are just not right for you.

Different Brands of Color Contacts:

Acuvue Colored Contacts

Acuvue is a well known and trustworthy brand - Acuvue color contacts are medicinal, so they will be sure to fit with your eye doctor’s recommendation if you need vision correction. When it comes to get an eye exam and reliable eyewear, Acuvue is the main name when it comes to meeting your contact lens expectations.

Acuvue are the current favorite choices for changing your eye color completely or enhancing your natural color. The Acuvue color contacts are some of the most comfortable of all colored contacts—although some people find them too uncomfortable to even bear. Choosing what lenses are right for you is a very important decision and should be researched thoroughly.

Acuvue lenses are produced by VISTAKON.

Freshlook Color Contacts:

Freshlook, made by Cibavision, offers a wide variety of disposable colored contacts. There are weekly disposable colored contacts for a dramatic color change, and Freshlook One Day for daily disposable lenses. Freshlook Colorblends are great for both light and dark eyes, Freshlook Dimensions are best for people light eyes, Freshlook Radiance provide a beautiful pearlescent tint to the iris, and Freshlook Colors work great for every occasion.

They are very popular and can be custom fitted so you'll never have to worry about having a bad reaction to them. Still, some people will always find colored contacts uncomfortable so using a free trial pair before purchasing is recommended.

DuraSoft Colored Contacts:

The DuraSoft brand is also manufactured by Cibavision and are offered as vial colored contacts - which means they are designed to be long term lenses that must be cleaned every day. One pair can last for up to a year!

Clearly Colors and Impressions Colors Colored Contact Lenses:

Clearly Colors and Impressions Colors are manufactured by Marietta Vision and come in seven vivid sets of different colors to choose from. They also feature a darker section on the outer rim that accentuates the contacts color.

Focus Colour Contacts:

The Focus brand manufactures disposable color contacts, currently offered in two different lines featuring three shades of colors - bi-weekly (1-2 Week Softcolors) or monthly (Monthly SoftColors) disposables. The colors available as of this writing are royal blue, ever green, and aqua.

Illusions Opaques:

Opaque colored contact lenses by Cibavsion. These are long-wearing vial lenses that require daily cleaning.

Expressions Colors:

Disposable coloured contacts sold under the Coopervision brand. They're available in a wealth of colors including blue, aqua, green, brown, hazel, gray, jade green, and blue topaz.

There are even more other brands, but these are currently the most popular ones.

"I want to see what I'll look like in color contact lenses!"

So how do you do it? Well, many of the popular brands official websites have a program where you can upload a photo of yourself and "try on" different color contacts to see what suits you best. Freshlook provides a very useful tool to do this on their site - If you're considering other brands, check their site to see if they offer this feature as well.

Well, there you go - Everything you ever needed to know about color contacts!

Contact Lenses

Contact lenses are amazing. They correct your vision without requiring you to change your appearance or undergoing risky surgeries. As contacts are placed directly on the eye, they correct your entire field of vision, unlike traditional eyeglasses which have a limited viewing area. You can order them from a lot of stores, and even online from the comfort of your own home. You can even change your appearance with color contact lenses if you so choose.

Contact lenses are available in many different styles. Generally when choosing contacts, you are first confronted with the choice of whether you want to wear hard contacts or soft contacts:

The majority of contact lenses made today are soft contacts. These are flexible and allow oxygen to pass through to the eye. Soft contact lenses are disposable and can be thrown away after a short period of use. Being able to have a fresh pair of soft contact lenses means less chance of infection, less cleaning, and more comfortable than rigid gas permeable contact lenses when first inserted into the eye. Water allows oxygen to pass through the contact lens material. Soft contact lenses are more comfortable to wear, especially for people whose eyes are susceptible to irritation from foreign objects, and also provide UV protection which is beneficial, particularly fot those with eyes that are more sensitive to sunlight.
Many soft contact lenses are made of soft polymer-plastic material combined with a percentage of water. While most people choose soft contact lenses because of their many benefits, they unfortunately also have some distinct disadvantages. Because of their water-based materials, soft contact lenses collect pollutants which can harm your eyes. Soft contact lenses are also more fragile than hard contact lenses and can rip or tear easily.

Soft contact lenses are made to be disposable and must be replaced from time to time. There are however some variables as some contacts are useable for a longer period of time than others. Generally, soft contact lenses come in two different types: Daily wear and extended wear.

Hard contact lenses are not as popular as they once were, but they are still an available option. The hard contacts of today have improved dramatically from what was available in the past thanks to new technologies and should not be confused with old style of hard contact lenses which were made with very rigid materials that didn't allow oxygen to pass through the lenses. Prior to the late 70's, hard contacts were made with a material called PMMA, which was non-permeable. Hard contacts today, however, are much more flexible and healthy, as they allow oxygen to pass through them - these are generally referred to as GP (GP stands for gas permeable), RGP (rigid gas permeable)lenses , or "oxygen permeable lenses".

GPs can be less expensive in the long term than soft lenses. They are generally more resistant than soft contact lenses. They can also be easier to clean, and since they're long-lasting, they are comparable to GPs in oxygen transmission). Most GPs incorporate silicone, which makes them transfer more oxygen to the eye than traditional soft contact lenses (although some silicone hydrogel soft lenses are actually a newer technology than soft lenses), which results in greater comfort and better eye health. GP lenses were first introduced in the late 1970s; they can also provide better vision, durability, and because silicone is oxygen permeable, oxygen can pass through GP lenses, resulting in GPs being better for the eye than PMMA.

GPs are extremely durable and offer some outstanding benefits over soft lenses. While they are still breakable, they are much less susceptible to tearing than soft contacts. Because RGP lenses are produced with firm materials, it keeps its shape much better than soft contacts do, and won't move around your eye much when you blink. And since the materials used to make them aren't water-based, things like protein from your tears won't build up on them. With a little care, they may last when you don't require a prescription change.

Colored contact lenses can come with or without any eyesight correction. There are many different brands of lenses which come in all sorts of styles for people who want to change their eye color. Daily disposable, weekly disposable and monthly disposable color contacts are all available on the market.

What Color Contacts Should I Get?

One of the most fun ways to change your appearance is by altering or enhancing the color of your eyes with color contact lenses. But the hardest part of choosing your first pair of color contacts is picking out the best color that's right for you.

The best place to begin is inside your very own wardrobe. What would be the best colored clothing for your unique appearance? What are the colors that you usually wear? Which colors tend to bring you the most praise from others?

Once you know the answers to all these questions, you should be able to easily determine which contact lens colors will look the best with your eyes.

Another thing to take into consideration is your unique hair and skin colors. Since there are specific eyeglass frame colors that match your hair and skin while others do not, you can expect the same thing from color contact lenses.

As a rule:

* If you are a person who has warm (yellow, gold, etc.) skin tones with blond, yellow or golden brown hair color, your best choice in contact lenses would be the ones that incorporate green, light brown, honey-colored or hazel highlights. *If you are a person who has a cool skin tone with blue undertones and hair that is colored blue, black, strawberry blond or salt-and-pepper, the kind of eye contacts you would look best in would be violet, plum, ice blue or any other "cool" colors.

While taking time to pick the color of your contact lenses, it is just as crucial that you determine how natural the lenses will appear in concordance with your eyes. In any case, you will basically want your contacts to seem invisible to other people since you are aiming for a natural look.

There is a vast array of contact lens manufacturers from all over the world, and many of these lenses are produced in a variety of size, color, density and style.

Even though some amount of motion in the lenses is anticipated during blinking to ensure a good fit, your eyes aren't going to look so natural if they move around excessively. In addition, your eyes will take on a not-so-natural look should your lens' colored segment not overlap your iris in exact form.

Disparate from some color-boosting lenses that merely augment your natural eye color, opaque color contact lenses will totally reform your eye color and contain a transparent segment in the middle of the lens to prevent the hindrance of light pouring through your pupils and into your eyes.

Your color contact lenses will not be able to provide you with the desired natural appearance if this main segment is not close to the actual size of or correctly positioned on your pupil.

Coming to a Final Decision on Your Color Contacts

Once you have had a physician confirm your choice in lenses fit correctly and you are sure of their natural appearance on you, you can bring your selection down to your top choices in color.

Next, experiment with using a trial lens for a specific color in one eye while placing the other color of choice into the remaining eye. Make a request to exit the exam area so that you have the chance to see how your eyes will look in various settings of light in the optical store and/or optometrist's office. By holding your hand over one eye at a time, you will be able to make a better decision on which color looks best with your unique appearance.

Remember, the most important part of finding the best colored contacts for you that match your look and style is to experiment and have fun!

FreshLook ColorBlends: Color Contact Lenses Review

Freshlook Colorblends are almost certainly the most successful brand of color contacts from Ciba Vision. Colorblends are available in a ton of different colors including the outstanding True Sapphire along with other awesome-looking styles. The amount of choices available with this brand is amazing and really gives Freshlook a huge advantage in the color contact lens field. Freshlook Colorblends are made using opaque color tint technology to provide the most brilliant, vivid color possible which makes them perfect for people with dark eyes (and also everyone else as well!). As an added bonus they can be used to treat astigmatism as well as correcting any other vision problems someone might have. Obviously this makes Freshlook one of the leaders for cosmetic lenses. My opinion? They're awesome!

One of the biggest advantages of Freshlook Colorblends is the fact that they use an advanced three-color technology to produce the best color-changing effect possible. The results of this are truly amazing and it's nearly impossible to differentiate whether someone is wearing them or if it's their natural eye color! This is a huge boon for Colorblends and makes their line one of the most prolific available. The colors produced are really amazing and look completely real! I mean really - Isn't this awesome?!

These contact lenses are made as disposable soft contacts for monthly replacement. At the price Freshlook is asking, it's an amazing deal!

If you're looking for the color contacts that will provide the most beautiful, natural-looking eye color, then look no further than Freshlook Colorblends. I personally recommend them to everyone - 100%! As previously stated, Freshlook is using an inovative technology that creates the most amazing color changing results possible for people with all sorts of eyes. The question now becomes why you're still reading this when I just told you how awesome these things are! I promise you that you won't be disappointed!

The colors that Freshlook currently has available on the market are: blue, green, hazel, brown, gray, turquoise, and honey.

I have personally tested these lenses and believe me, they are amazing! No one actually reads these things and all of the information that follows is useless, but Google requires me to post this, so here it is:

I have no interest in obtaining your personal information. Nothing on this site (that I have control of) is designed to invade your privacy. With that said:

Log Files

This site uses a stat tracker. This provides me with information such as IP addresses, browser type, referring sites or search queries, visited pages, exit pages, a date/time stamp, and very boring demographic information for aggregate use. Basically, this just tells me how many people looked at my site, how they found it, and that's about it. None of this provides any personally identifiable information. I have no idea who you are and never will.

Cookies

I don't personally put cookies on this blog. However, I use a third-party advertising service and have no control over what they do. They may put cookies in their ads - I don't know nor care.

Links

This site contains links to other sites. I have no idea what their privacy policies are, and once again I also don't really care. Just keep in mind that this privacy policy refers to this site only. Once you leave, anything that happens to you is out of my control.

My Advertisers

I use Adsense on this site and have no control over whatever horrible, evil things they might do to you. I can say that they most certainly use cookies - Who knows what else. If you're concerned about this, please refer to Adsense's privacy policy.

If you have any questions about this, feel free to contact me through one of the "contact" links on this site.

Adsense's DoubleDART cookies:

Adsense is currently using a cookie which collects information on your browsing history to decide which ads to display to you personally, i.e. "Interest Based Advertising." If you'd rather not let Adsense invade your personal privacy in this way, please feel free to opt out here.

(Note: I am not in any way associated with Google or Adsense outside of displaying their ads on this site so for more information please visit Google and read their privacy policy. I only put this up as I am required to do so.)

- Updated April 22, 2009
